Riders Edge® New Rider Course

With the use of our motorcycles, established curriculum, skilled instructors, and a supportive atmosphere, the New Rider Course is designed to teach those new to motorcycling how to feel comfortable and confident, and ride safely. Come prepared by bringing the following: DOT approved helmet, protective eyewear, full-fingered gloves, over-the-ankle leather boots, jeans, heavy long-sleeved shirt, valid automobile driver's license or learner's permit, and the ability to ride a bicycle.

Upon completion of the course and you are appliying for your Motorcycle Endorsement in the state of MIssouri, the class qualifies as the driving portion of your Motorcycle Endorsement Test. You will then ONLY need to go to a local testing office to take the written portion of the test in which you already took and passed in order to complete the course.

Class option are as follows (unless otherwise indicated). You may choose one of the following. Classes total 25 hours; there is a weekday class which runs Tuesday through Thursday 8am-5pm, or an Evenings and Weekend class which runs Thursday and Friday evening 5:30pm-8:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am-4pm, Tuesday 5:30pm-8:30pm.

Riders Edge® Skilled Rider Course

For riders who want a challenge, the Skilled Rider Course will put you and your motorcycle to the test. Courses are offered on scheduled Saturday's from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants use their own motorcycles. All makes are welcome.

Come prepared with the following: DOT approved helmet, motorcycle license, proof of valid motorcycle insurance, protective eyewear, motorcycling gloves, long-sleeve shirt or jacket, over-the-ankle boots, and jeans or motorcycling pants.

Rusty James, Program Manager

Rusty has been a Program Manager for Rider's Edge since the program's inception at Gail's Harley-Davidson. He has been training motorcycle riders, including police officers, since 1993 and has been riding motorcycles for over 40 years.

I have worked at the Grandview Police Department for over thirty years. My desire to become an instructor and teach motorcycle classes comes from some of the unpleasant sights that I have observed over the years. I thought there should be something that I could do to share my experiences, and give riders the opportunity to learn some of the basic riding skills. I heard about the courses available through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), applied to become an instructor, was accepted, and even passed the course.

My first opportunity to teach, was the Basic Rider Motorcycle course at the Missouri Safety Center located on the campus of CMSU (now UCM), in Warrensburg Mo. Several years ago I went through the Harley-Davidson Instructor Course to teach Riders Edge at Gail’s Harley Davidson. I enjoy teaching new riders who have never been on a motorcycle in their life, or have very little experience. It is also a great pleasure seeing those who have not ridden for some time and take the course to learn proper techniques, who are then able to turn around in a 20’ configuration by the end of class.

The second part I enjoy is instructing the Riders Edge Experienced Rider Course ERC. This course gives me the opportunity to work with those who have been riding for years. It is refreshing to hear them talk during the class about what they learned, sharing experiences, showing them something new or just giving them the opportunity to smooth out their techniques during class.

Brian has been a police officer with the City of Olathe since 1988, was a police motorcycle operator from 1997-2006, and a police motorcycle instructor since 1999. He became a motorcycle safety inspector through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in 2001. In 2008 He became one of Gail's Harley-Davidson's Riders Edge Rider Coaches.

Dan is a retired KCMO police officer with 27 years experience as a motorcycle officer. He is a Nationally Certified Motorcycle Instructor for KCMO, has been a Motorcycle Safely Foundations Ridecoach for eight years, a Riders Edge Instructor for three years, and a motorcyclist for over 50 years.

Larry is a retired police officer with 29 years of service and a background in training and education. He has been a Motocycle Safety Insructor since 2005 and became a Gail's Harley-Davidson Riders Edge Instructor in 2010. He rides a 2008 H-D Street Glide and is active in the American Heartland H.O.G.
